disconnected puts the trans in 3rd gear, which is 1:1, and the converter lockup is supposed to prohibit any viscous slippage of the converter. Seemed to me that there was an issue with getting a complete lockup with the converter though - it was doing some strange things on the dyno that I have never seen an auto do before.
